Q: What is the Equifax Data Breach?
A: In May 2017 hackers broke into the files of Equifax. This breach compromised the personal identifying information of close to 143 million Americans making this the largest data breach in history. More than 200,000 personal credit-card numbers were compromised, and hackers gained access to names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security information, and even driver’s license numbers. The above information has now been exposed to potential criminals who will look to use for their advantage Equifax waited closed to six weeks before disclosing this security breach to the general public.

Q: What will or can hackers do with your personal information?
A: Those with access to your personal information may look to steal your identity and access your bank or other financial accounts. They may also try to make unauthorized purchases or obtain loans in your name.

Q: How did Equifax allow this to happen?
A: Equifax had several data breaches from 2013 to 2016. They also were aware that Experian who is one of their major competitors had previously been breached. Equifax knew they were vulnerable to hackers/data breaches and failed to take the proper measures to secure their  data systems and protect your personal information. Shortly after Equifax learned of the breach, and before the public was alerted, Equifax leadership sold close to $2 million worth of stock as they knew the value of the stock would drop once the breach became public.

Q: What can I do to protect myself?
A: Monitor your credit report on a regular basis and pay closer attention to your bank statements. Place fraud alerts on your credit cards, and file your tax returns as early as possible.

Q: What can ConsumerLawPA.com do for me?
A: If our Equifax class action lawyers determine that you have a valid cause of action against Equifax you can join the class action case that has been filed on behalf of those affected by the Equifax Data Breach. In a class action all plaintiffs with similar claims against a common defendant, in this case the defendant is Equifax, are represented by one or two people who have also been affected by the breach.  This eliminates the need for each individual person to file a lawsuit. The Equifax class action asks a federal court to force Equifax to implement greater security measures and asks for an award of monetary damages for the members of the class.
