Death by a Thousand Unfulfilled Zelle Promises

_BreakFree

The fact that young people are far less materialistic than their parents were at their age must be something to celebrate. Owning a house in the suburbs and two cars was once an attainable goal, but if we are being honest, it always left the people who achieved it just as lonely as they were when they were living in a studio apartment within walking distance of a liquor store. Today, when people want to show off, they simply use their mind-bogglingly competent smartphones to make professional looking content and post it online next to every other professional looking content. The days of showing off by taking all your friends out to dinner at a chain restaurant are in the distant past. If it was a rite of passage when you treated your friends to a midnight breakfast at Denny’s, you are officially old. Young people are finding ways to socialize that cost little or nothing, such as gathering in a friend’s living room and reading books from the public library. Of course, young people are so financially distressed that most of us cannot even afford the minimal costs of socializing, but being lonely is exponentially more painful than being in debt. If you are a young adult whose efforts to stay socially connected for your own survival are stretching your budget to the limit, contact a Philadelphia debt relief lawyer.

Are Unpaid Pizza Debts the Price of Not Being Lonely?

You are not extravagant, and most of your efforts go into paid and unpaid work. Most of your expenses are boring bills, like rent, utilities, transportation, and groceries. You socialize just enough to offer a convincing counterargument to those overpaid members of Generation X who get paid more money than you can dream of to deplore the social skills of people your age. Nothing is free, though. There is food at social gatherings. You insist that your friends attend even when they cannot pay for the food. You, the most gainfully employed member of your friend group, spring for the pizzas at the local pizzeria’s weeknight price or the rotisserie chicken from the supermarket. Your friends attend and promise to send you their share of the price on Zelle once they get paid.

One payday comes and goes and then another. At the next social gathering, you are the only one who can pay for the food, and again, determined not to be lonely, you insist that your cash-strapped friends attend. Your friends still can’t pay.

It isn’t the end of the world. No one goes hungry or gets evicted from an apartment. You can still pay your bills, but just barely. You can’t make progress on your debts. You can’t qualify for loans. The trouble is that lenders and credit reporting bureaus don’t see that your friends owe you money.
